Quick Tree-Care Tips

Do the right things to keep your trees healthy.

WATER TREES DURING DROUGHT OR EXTREME HEAT!! They may have outgrown their area. Water slow, deep, and long.

Use CARE when transplanting not to damage roots. Plant AT soil level, do not pile extra soil on top of root ball. Water often.
REMOVE BANDS OR TIES--they strangle fluid flows under bark.
For construction, install plastic fencing at the drip-line so that workers don’t dig, pile materials, or park under under trees.
Research! Plant the right tree in the right place.
Protect young trees but don't tie anything to them.
Do NOT add soil, bricks, new plantings, stones, planters or walkways around or under an existing tree; it smothers roots and will kill the tree.
After construction, do NOT regrade the soil over the roots. Leave the soil level where it was. Short walls can hold back excess soil at the tree's drip line.
Learn proper pruning techniques or hire a sensitive professional who knows how to ASK THE TREE where best to prune.
Use a sprinkling of mulch, don’t pile it up at the base. Heavy mulch can suffocate tree roots and draw chewing animals to the trunk.
LEAVE leaves; they have natural fertilizer and beneficials. Shred them for winter.  Avoid “topping” trees; it stops their overall growth.  Avoid road salt; it poisons them.
